1980 Birkenhead Mountain Time Trial
My favourite pic of Eddie and me. What a coach that man was and how much I miss him! This was another of our "plans" and the pic was taken after the Birkenhead Mountain Time Trial.
This was a fantastic circuit, starting in Llangollen and going straight up the Horseshoe Pass, down the Nant y Garth, into Ruthin, over the very hilly Cerrigs, into Cerrig y Dridion and back down the A5 to Llangollen for 50 miles of hell ... No-one had ever beaten 2 hours for the course, so Eddie decided it was time somebody did.
To this end , Eddie, Bob Memmery and I went to try a dress rehearsal 2 weeks before the event around the course. I managed a 1.53.12 and Eddie kept the watch on his mantle piece at home to show anyone who cared to ask what it was, that Dave Lloyd had beaten 2 hours for the MTT course.
No-one believed it and when Cycling Weekly got hold of the news, they printed the story and there was much jocularity by lots of doubters.
So, on the day, the pressure was ENORMOUS and hung over me like a cloud ... I HAD to prove I had done it. To cut a long story short I managed a 1.54.30 on the day and won by 12½ minutes.
The pic is of me crying with relief with Eddie ... I bawled my head off, I was so emotional to have actually done it ... BUT we had proved the doubters wrong again ... I think Chris was as relieved as me, as she was in tears too ... I haven't really mentioned Chris very much in these stories, but she has been me "ROCK" throughout my career and without her I wouldn't be here today ... That's another story!!
