1975 National Road Race Championship
I had just come back to GB from riding the Tour de Suisse, where I rode one of my best ever Pro races and would have finished 4th overall if Post hadn't made me stop to help Thurau when I was in the main break of the race with Merckx, de Vlaeminck, Pfenninger etc.
I had never been in such good condition and when we came back for Harrogate week, I won all the Time Trials by miles and when it came to the National Road Race, part of the Harrogate week, I was a VERY marked man. I had NO chance of winning.
I chased every break, got into every move and finally ran out of steam on the last lap to finish 4th.
The whole field rode against me ... The pic is of me chasing a dangerous break, getting no help from anyone, especially my team mate Bob Cary, who is sitting on the back here ... At least I caused some pain ... Here Danny Horton, Keith Lambert and Hugh Porter looks a bit distressed ... You win some, you lose some!
