1973 Milan San Remo
In a moment of madness I decided to attack after 1 kilometre ... I'll never know why, I just did it, and to my surprise I was joined 2 kilometres later by my old pal Phil Bayton. So I thought, "What the hell ... let's go for it".
We worked well together and got a maximum lead of 8 minutes and stayed away for 4 ½ hours. We got to the Turchino Pass where Phil punctured. I waited for him and we were finally caught by a small group containing Luis Ocana ... Phil was dropped, but I hung on for a while longer and this group was also caught shortly after and just before the Poggio ... I then punctured myself ... chased to get back on before the Poggio and blew my brains.
A great adventure was over, but Phil and I had put Raleigh on the TV for a long time and the sponsors were over the moon.
Phil and I had also experienced a fantastic day where the crowds were manic and the atmosphere in Italy is unlike anywhere else in the World ... SUPERB DAY!
